Side-Lying Torticollis Stretch using Boppy Pillow

This is a great right torticollis stretch we learned at physical therapy for our daughter.  A Boppy Pillow, which seems to be a staple in most parents' homes, is needed for this stretch.  In this post, both a video tutorial AND step-by-step instructions with a picture will be provided to explain this torticollis stretch.

Video Tutorial:

Step-by-Step Written Instructions:

1.  Lay baby on her right side with the right side of her head laying on the Boppy Pillow. Baby's right side of body and right shoulder should be resting on the ground.

Kellyn's fascination with these rings distracted her long enough to get through this stretch.

2.  Encourage baby to play with small toys in this position using both hands. Be sure that baby's right hand isn't stuck under body and that she is using both hands equally to play.

3.  Be sure to be present and supervising the entire time throughout this exercise. Baby should never be face down on the pillow and you should always be able to see her face at all times.

Additional Notes:
  • Babies with left torticollis would do this stretch laying on their left side.
  • Do NOT do this stretch if baby actively resists because you could unintentionally be strengthening the side of the neck that doesn't need to be strengthened.
