Early Intervention Program Evaluation

Today was Kellyn's evaluation with our state's early intervention program. It provides support services to families with children who have developmental delays and/or special needs. If a child qualifies, the child will be assigned a therapist to work with her at home. I am quite familiar with this program since my two and a half-year-old son Luke has been receiving services for an expressive language delay since he was about eighteen months old. We absolutely love this program.

Anyways, Kellyn received a full evaluation by a physical therapist, occupational therapist, and a developmental therapist. They would be testing her in various areas to see if she had any developmental delays and if her torticollis warranted any physical therapy services.

The evaluation lasted almost an hour and the women evaluating her could not have been any nicer. And Kellyn had a blast getting to play with new toys and getting lots of attention from different people. At the end of the evaluation, both the occupational therapist and the developmental therapist did not recommend any services in their areas. The physical therapist did recommend physical therapy services due to treat her torticollis. She recommended that my daughter receive in-home physical therapy three times per month. The physical therapist also recommended that Kellyn get evaluated for scoliosis by her pediatrician. Yikes! That recommendation scared me. I couldn't bear the thought of another potential medical issue with Kellyn. But you better believe I was on the phone within the hour making a same-day appointment with her pediatrician.

The next step would be that a physical therapist would be assigned to my daughter. I would be receiving a phone call from her assigned therapist likely within a few weeks. I was very grateful that Kellyn qualified for services in-home. I felt like I have been going crazy driving her around to numerous appointments lately. Having someone come to my home really takes some of the stress out of the equation.
