Range of Motion Stretch for Right Torticollis

In addition to a head tilt, many babies with torticollis also have limited range of motion in the neck to one side.  Kellyn's limited range of motion is to her right side.  Therefore, I stretch her head in the right direction.  In this post, I will provide both a video demonstration AND a written explanation of the exercise (with pictures).

Video Tutorial:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1.  Have baby sit on lap facing outwards.  Draw baby's attention to her right side so that she looks in that direction.  If she starts out looking in this right direction, it will make it easier to hold her head into place.

2.  Then, take your right hand and gently hold her head in that right direction.

3.  With your left hand, stabilize baby's left shoulder so she doesn't "cheat" by turning that shoulder with her head.

4.  Hold stretch for 30 seconds.

Notes: Babies with left torticollis and limited left-side range of motion in their neck would do this exercise with their head turned towards their left direction.  In addition, do NOT do this stretch if baby actively resists because you could unintentionally be strengthening the side of the neck that doesn't need to be strengthened.
